Feline Fitness Tips for Your Indoor Cat

Separate Food and Water

Instead of placing your cat’s food and water bowls side-by-side, make him or her take an extra step. It may be easier for you to place them close together, but as soon as the bowls are moved around, your cat will be forced to walk between the two. Remember, the farther apart the better – you might even consider placing them on different floors.

Another way to get your cat to work for raiment is by placing feeding bowls on the counter. If your cat is forced to jump, he or she will be getting more exercise than they might otherwise.

Use a Laser Pointer
Set aside specific times during the day to play “laser tag” with your pet. Most cats can’t stand still when there is a little red dot distracting them. Laser pointers will get your cat leaping, bounding, jumping, and running. If you want him or her to move, a laser pointer will be the perfect catalyst for action.

Choose Toys, Not Treats
Don’t bog your cat down with unhealthy treats. Though a little indulgence never hurts, it is better to help your cat become lighter and leaner by rewarding him or her with toys.

Flexible cat wands or fishing poles (they usually have a feather, mouse, or other fun object at the end) will encourage your cat to move. Whether you lead them up the stairs, urge them to jump onto high places, or simply help them be more engaged with constant activity, a wand is a terrific tool to exercise your cat.

A cat tower will also help with your cat’s physical fitness. By climbing and jumping to different tiers on a cat tower, your feline will be fit in no time at all.

It doesn’t take much to boost your cat’s activity level. Most veterinarians agree that active cats will live longer (and more fulfilling) lives – give yours the opportunity to do just that. If you make play time a priority (and take the extra step to make meal time a game) your cat is bound to be healthier and happier.
