Long haired cat getting its claws trimmed

How to trim your cat’s claws

Most pet owners dread trimming their cat’s claws, but cutting their nails short doesn’t need to be stressful. With the proper knowledge and a little bit of patience, most cats can learn to tolerate having their nails cut. Here’s a step-by-step guide for trimming your cat’s claws.

  1. Play with their paws. Get your cat used to having their paws touched. Start by rubbing them gently for a few seconds at a time. After a while, you can work on squeezing their toe pads with your thumb and forefinger. The more you do this, the less they’ll resist when it comes time to trim their claws.
  2. Set the mood. Wait until your cat is tired or relaxed before attempting to trim their nails. Choose a quiet setting to help keep them calm.
  3. Gather the right tools. Scissor-style nail clippers are easy to handle and are made especially for cats. Make sure to have all your tools within reach before you begin.
  4. Get into position. Choose a position that works best for both of you. If you prefer to be sitting down, you can place your cat lengthwise across your lap or you can roll them on their back lying face up in the area between your legs.
  5. Isolate the nail. Hold your cat’s paw with your non-dominant hand. Their claws are retractable so you’ll need to put pressure on their paw pads until the nail extends. Notice the white area at the tip of the nail where it starts to curve downward. This is the part you’ll trim.
  6. Be cautious. Avoid trimming too close to the nail quick. This is the pink or black part at the base of their claws. It’s a sensitive area that contains many nerves and blood vessels. It’s better to trim less than risk cutting the quick.
  7. Use the right technique. Don’t trim straight across. Instead, come in from the side and cut at a 45-degree angle. Use a firm pressure to make a clean cut.
  8. Start slow. Only trim a few nails at a time. You can slowly increase this as your cat begins to tolerate the process better.
  9. Reward your cat. After each trimming session, remember to reward your cat with treats, cuddles and playtime.
