Summertime is the ideal season to enjoy the outdoors with your dog. However, as the temperatures rise, it’s important to ensure that your pet’s body temperature stays at a healthy level for them.
To learn how to keep your animal companion cool and safe, read these helpful tips from Bellamy-Lawrence Animal Hospital, your Toronto veterinary clinic.
1) TURN UP THE AC AT HOME
Maintaining a cool home is paramount to your dog’s health during the summer. So, even when your pet is home alone, run your air conditioning to guarantee that the heat levels don’t rise to hazardous levels in your absence. If your home isn’t air conditioned, we recommend investing in a high-quality fan, keeping the curtains drawn during the day and investing in a cooling device like a self-cooling pet mat. 2.) PROVIDE ACCESS TO COLD WATER
To keep your dog well-hydrated around the clock, make sure they continuously have access to cold drinking water. Many owners even add ice cubes to lower the water’s temperature for longer. If you have the yard space, consider also setting up a wading pool or sprinkler for your dog. That way, they can feel as cool and refreshed as you do during a trip to the beach. 3.) STAY INDOORS DURING PEAK HOURS
When the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, otherwise known as high noon, your pooch should be safely indoors. Between the midday hours of 11AM to 2PM, the summer weather reaches its most elevated temperatures. So, to reduce the risk of overheating, it’s best to schedule your dog’s walks and outdoor playtimes for early morning and late evening. 4.) KEEP THEM IN THE SHADE
Whether you’re strolling together through the neighbourhood or your dog is simply lounging outside, ensure they stick to the shade. Shaded areas with ample tree covering are cooler than those in direct sunlight. If your property lacks shade, we suggest investing in an elevated dog cot with a canopy to block out the sunrays. Or, for an environmentally friendly, long-term solution, take the time to plant some trees. 5.) NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A PARKED CAR
Last, but certainly not least, never ever leave your dog in a parked vehicle. During the summertime, the temperature inside your car can skyrocket in a matter of minutes, even with a window left ajar. Excessive heat can cause extreme discomfort, heatstroke and even fatalities in dogs.
