HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DOG IS IN PAIN?

Different dogs can vary considerably in how they react to pain. Some will immediately let you know it while others might quite convincingly cover it up. So how do you know that it's time to bring your pooch in to a Toronto animal clinic? Thankfully, even the most stoic of dogs are going to show symptoms of pain, especially if the pain is severe. At Bellamy-Lawrence Animal Hospital, vet clinic in Toronto, we teach pet owners to be on the lookout for the following signs that their dog might be in pain.

- Whining and whimpering One of the most obvious signs that your dog is in pain and likely needs the attention of a Toronto animal clinic is vocalizations such as whining and whimpering. If there is no other reason for your dog's discomfort, such as whining and whimpering for food, attention, or a walk, then they may be trying to tell you that they don't feel well. - Posture and mobility changes A limp or a change in your dog's gait is also a strong indicator that your dog is experiencing some kind of pain. At the same time, you may also notice a change in your dog's posture when they sit or lay down. - Panting and trembling Panting is normal when dogs are hot or have been exerting themselves. If, however, your dog is panting excessively and for no apparent reason, then a trip to a Toronto vet clinic may be in order. Panting can be a sign of pain and discomfort, especially when accompanied by trembling. - Excessive localized grooming Just like panting, grooming is normal dog behaviour. However, grooming that is excessive and localized to one specific area on your dog's body may be cause for concern. If it seems that your dog has become obsessed with grooming that one spot, then carefully inspect the area and be on the lookout for other signs of pain. - Change in mood and behaviour Finally, a dog that is in pain may display a number of different mood and behavioural changes. They may have a lack of appetite and trouble sleeping. Alternatively, a dog that is hurt and uncomfortable may also choose to sleep more often. Likewise, your friendly and cuddly pooch may become withdrawn, solitary, and potentially even aggressive because they feel the need to protect themselves. It is always best to visit a Toronto animal clinic if you are concerned about any of your dog's new behaviours or moods. Worried About Your Dog?
