HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAT SAFE AROUND THE POOL

Cat safely chilling in the pool

A backyard pool can be a great place to have fun and cool down in the summer. However, if you’re not careful, it can pose a serious risk for your cat. Here are a few ways to keep Mittens safe around the pool this summer.

4 pool safety devices you may to use The best way to prevent your cat from getting into an accident around your pool is to ensure the area is under supervision. However, this may not always be possible. Therefore, here are a few safety items you may want to purchase as an additional precaution:

  • Life vest. Although most cats tend to stay away from water, some are too curious for their own good. As such, it’s a good idea to purchase a pet life vest for your cat to wear when it’s out and about around the pool. They’re inexpensive and will ensure your cat stays afloat should it fall into the water.

  • Pool ramp. If your pool only has a ladder, it could be nearly impossible for your cat to get out of the pool if it falls in. Consequently, it could swim around until it tires out, panics and potentially drowns. Fortunately, there are various rigid and inflatable ramp devices you can easily install along the edge of your pool to prevent this from happening.

  • Immersion alarm. You may want to consider getting a water immersion alarm that attaches to your cat’s collar. As soon as the device becomes wet, an alarm will sound to let you know that your cat has fallen in.

  • Safety cover. While pool fencing is a great way to keep dogs out of your pool area, cats are more agile and can easily scale this type of barrier. Therefore, a pool cover is probably your safest bet. They’re made to fit the size of your pool and are solid enough for your cat to walk across safely when your pool isn’t in use.

In addition, when your cat is hanging around by the pool, make sure to have a fresh, clean bowl of water available so they aren’t tempted to drink from the pool. The chemicals in the water could make them ill or potentially irritate their skin.
