Dogs and humans alike need to drink plenty of water to stay healthy and hydrated, especially when the sun is shining and the temperature spikes. Here are five creative ways to hydrate your dog during a hot Toronto summer.
PUT OUT MORE WATER BOWLS
Some dogs won’t seek out water even when they’re thirsty. If you place several water bowls around the house, your dog won’t have to leave the room to drink. Make sure there’s water in the living room, kitchen, bedroom, backyard and anywhere else your dog likes to hang out.
MAKE A POOCH SMOOTHIE
If your dog loves treats, opt for a nutritious smoothie that will provide your pet with a tasty snack and an extra source of hydration. You can include leafy greens, apples and sweet berries, but be sure to avoid sugar, an excess of dairy products and other ingredients that aren’t safe for dogs.
GET A WATER FOUNTAIN
While most dogs have no problem lapping up water from a bowl, some prefer to drink from a source of moving water. Make hydration more engaging with a drinking fountain designed for pets that continuously dispenses a stream of water. Many models include a filter to remove fur and other impurities.
ADD WATER TO FIDO’S FOOD
A simple way to increase your dog’s liquid intake is to mix a bit of water with its food. Add the water at mealtime to avoid soggy kibble, but keep in mind that eating crunchy food doesn’t actually help keep your dog’s teeth clean.
GIVE YOUR PUP AN ICE POP
Many dogs love to lick and crunch ice cubes, which are a refreshing and calorie-free snack. Add a few to the water bowl or let your pet have fun sliding them around on the floor. Alternatively, you can use an ice cube tray to freeze low-sodium chicken broth or a dog-safe smoothie.
NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT WATER
Finally, remember to always bring water for you and your dog when you go for a walk or an outing. A bottle of water and a collapsible bowl can be easily carried or tossed in a backpack for a refreshing drink whenever you need it.
